Digital Certificate of Origin

A digital certificate of origin can replace the physical certificate, but what does it mean and what is a digital certificate of origin really?

In short, the digital certificate of origin is the original, ie. an XML file that typically appears as a PDF that is stamped and digitally signed. When a certificate of origin is issued as a digital certificate, this is the valid certificate. This means that a printout of the digital certificate is a physical copy of the original digital certificate. This is in contrast to a physical certificate, where a scanned copy of the certificate will be a digital copy of the original physical certificate.

The digitization of certificates has several benefits for both exporters and importers, as the documents can be distributed much faster than before and will thus increase the speed throughout the supply chain. The entire certificate flow becomes more flexible and can potentially free up working capital because waiting time can be reduced for both exporters and importers. The certificates can also be shared digitally, which is much faster than, for example, sending the certificates by post or courier.

How to get started with the digital certificate of origin?
First and foremost, as an export company, you must ensure that the customer/ importer will accept digital certificates of origin, but the vast majority of countries accept this.

Thus, it is most often a matter of making sure that the importer will accept a digitally signed certificate of origin in PDF format. Of course, there are differences from region to region and from importer to importer, so be sure to check with the local Chamber of Commerce before you get started.

Who can issue a CoO?
In Denmark, certificates of origin can be issued by the four chambers of commerce, the Danish Chamber of Commerce, the Confederation of Danish Industry, Danish Agriculture & Food Council, and SME Denmark. So the next step is to contact thechamber of commerce and find out if they offer digital certificates of origin.
