What is a cmr document?

A CMR transport document is based on the CMR convention, which establishes rules of ownership and responsibility for goods being transported by road. Therefore, the definition of CMR is not a document or a contract, but an international convention.

With a CMR document (known as both CMR freight and transportation document) the rules of the convention are established between a trading company and a carrying company. When signing, both parties agree to a set number of conditions. 

When do you need a cmr document?

A CMR document is the standard contract of carriage in Europe. Multiple countries of Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia are also part of the convention.

If your company is transporting goods by road in any of the membering states you need to fill out a CMR document. This ensures you of two things:

  • The carrying company can not refuse or cancel your shipment
  • You have more legal protection in case anything happens to the goods

What goods are covered by a cmr document?

All goods transported by road between the countries included in the CMR Convention are covered by the CMR document. It is however very important that you fill out the document correctly. If not, the sending of goods may not be properly covered.

Step-by-Step guide to filling out our cmr form

Step 1: 

  1. Go to your list of transport bookings on your Clearview Trade platform.
  2. Choose the shipment in question and click the “create document” symbol to the right under “actions”.

Step 2: 

Choose “CMR” from the drop down menu.

Step 3: 

  1. The application will now transfer all the information from the original transport booking to the CMR-shipment form.
  2. If you need to, you can fill out any blanks in the empty information slots. If not, you can scroll down to the bottom of the document.

Step 4: 

You now have different options for what to do with your CMR document.

  1. You can choose to print the document in either english or danish. You will find the printing options in the left bottom corner.
  2. You can save and close the document. You will find the “save” and “save and close” options in the bottom right corner.

Step 5:

When you return to your list of transport bookings, the CMR document will now be visible to you if you click the “documents manager” symbol to the right of the chosen shipment.

Step 6:

Remember to invite your customer to your platform. In that way they can access the CMR document and sign it when they receive the shipment. You can always watch your document status in the transport bookings list.

If you haven’t shared the document with the customer already, here is what you do:

  1. Find the shipment in question and click the “…” icon to the right under “actions”.
  2. Click the “send invitation” symbol in the drop down menu and give your customer the needed acces.
